Carbon Balance and Management is dedicated to publishing original research related to the understanding of the global carbon cycle, as well as methodologies for its measurement and analysis and reviews of topics within the field. This includes studies of spatial and temporal distributions of carbon pools and fluxes, control and feedback mechanisms of the carbon-climate system and points of intervention for managing the carbon-climate-human system. The journal supports the work of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) by providing governmental and non-governmental organizations with instantaneous access to contemporary knowledge, including paradigm shifts and consensual views.
New article collection: Carbon mitigation potential in land: Lessons learned, present actions, and future priorities
Land-based mitigation options are crucial to achieve net-zero emissions. Conservation and changes in land use and land management practices can reduce net emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide from all sectors; increase the quantity of carbon stored in soils and above ground vegetation; and generate fuels that recycle carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Moreover, land-based mitigation is estimated to be cheap in comparison to energy sector abatement, and it provides other benefits to society like enhancing wildlife habitat, improving water quality, and lessening soil erosion.
