A complete accounting of net forest sector carbon emissions to the atmosphere and mitigation potential requires a systems-based approach which considers the relationships between the forest ecosystem, land use change, harvested wood products, and the substitution benefits associated of using bioenergy (biofuel) and wood products in place of fossil fuel energy and other more emission intensive materials
